After college, I had to make a life changing choice. Do I stay in the small town I grew up in or do I do the out of the box and move to Singapore? Singapore was a place that I really loved and wanted to live post college anyway. The colleges are fantastic and the area is beautiful. The move choice was an easy one and the process was just as easy. The only downside is that I needed a job, and needed to find someone who was looking for a part time helper in Singapore.
Looking for a job was one of the harder things that I did. For starters, no one really knows what to do with a foreigner coming into their land looking for work. The cultural differences can be a downside for both parties: the employee and the employer. I guess after a string of bad luck with putting in application and hoping for the best, I sort of given up on my needing a job and was looking online for US based companies that were looking for remote workers. That was also a really large fail.
When I started college in the fall, a whole new world opened up. I met so many new people and they were listening to my woes on not having a job or money. One guy, who I will call Sam, took it upon himself to get me to go to his father’s shop. He had worked there since he was 16 and his dad is always someone who is willing to help anyone get on their feet. I couldn’t have thanked Sam enough, but I knew the idea of someone hiring a foreigner was maybe still out of reach.
After classes one day, me and Sam when to his dad’s shop. It was a wood painting arena, where Sam’s dad painting wooden figures like birds and containers. I don’t have much art talent and I let them both know that up front. Sam’s dad asked me “Can you paint an object a solid color?” and I said “That doesn’t take talent, I could do that.” and I was hired! I couldn’t thank Sam and his dad enough! They both basically took me in and cared for me when I was on my own in Singapore!
