The fire started down in one of the basements. Every year in the fall we have a yard sale and there is a bunch of stuff packed in there. When it comes time for the yard sale we will take it all out and put it on display up in the sanctuary and every other place which makes sense. They have not really figured out what caused the fire, beyond the fact that it was electrical. The fire department responded very quickly and in fact you can only tell there was a fire in one room. Smoke remediation is the big problem. Even when the fire is only effecting a relatively small part of the structure, the smoke is going to get in everything. It is really overpowering when you walk into the place. It does not matter that you are in the chapel, which is a very long distance from the place where the fire was burning.
In fact there is not anything that a person like you or me could do about this sort of thing. You have to hire a company who knows what they are doing and has all of the gear that you need to accomplish the task. The people we hired had around forty or fifty people I think, many of them seemed to be illegal aliens, but that did not really concern us too much. It took them around two weeks, so we had to improvise in the meanwhile. Sunday school had to be cancelled and we took the folding chairs out into the courtyard where the preacher gave the sermon. We helped out as much as we could. That was not that much, but of course there is a lot of things that you would not want to disappear in the process.
